We make assumptions
Each and every day
About where we work
And where we play
People we know
And those we’ve just met
About our dentist,
About our dog’s vet
Why are we wired
To judge at first sight?
Did this keep us safe
From monsters in the night?
Or is the fear of the other
Something strange and new?
Something we should fight,
Struggle until we’re through?
I think of this often
As I go about my days
And take a second to review
What my primitive brain says
Sometimes it keeps me safe
Sometimes it can be wrong
But I hope as long as I consider
Another singer’s song
That each day will be better
I’ll learn, and appreciate
Everyone is different
And that’s what makes life great.
